The Three Minute Thesis Competition

The 11th China Conference on Sound and Music Technology will be held on October 11-13, 2024 (Friday-Sunday) at China University of Geosciences (Wuhan). For more information, please refer to Wechat public account CSMC-CSMT, or the conference website https://www.csmcw-csmt.org.cn. The conference will include an additional session of the popular Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, which is designed to quickly introduce a research topic to highly educated audiences without a professional background and to explain its importance, thus developing students' academic, presentation and research communication skills.

1. About Three Minute Thesis

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is a novel academic competition for graduate students. Developed by Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson at the University of Queensland, 3MT cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

The first 3MT competition was held at UQ in 2008 with 160 Higher Degree by Research candidates competing.

Since 2011 the popularity of the competition has increased and 3MT competitions are now held in over 900 universities across more than 85 countries worldwide.

2. Competition Regulations

· Participants are limited to one still slide.

· The presentation slide must accompany the oral presentation and be shown at the beginning of the presentation.

· The slide must not contain any switching effects or animations.

· The slide must not contain sound or movies.
